Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effects of self-encouragement on the relationship between children¡¯s stress and psychological maladjustment. The subjects were 732 students (male: 349, female: 383) in 4th to 6th grades. The Children¡¯s Stress Scale, the Self-Encouragement Scale, and the Emotional or Behavioral Problems Scale were administered. In order to test the research hypotheses, the collected data were analyzed through correlation analyses and structural equation modeling. The results of this study are as follows: Of the relational models with self-encouragement as mediator, stress as predictor and psychological maladjustment as outcome variable, it was proved that the partial mediation model fit the data better than the complete mediation model in both male and female groups. In the partial mediation model, the mediating effect of self-encouragement was statistically significant. According to the results of this study, it was proved that not only children¡¯s stress directly affect their psychological maladjustment, but also the relation between stress and psychological maladjustment is mediated by their self-encouragement. Thus, even if children¡¯s psychological maladjustment increased due to their life stress, their self-encouragement could reduce the negative impact of stress on psychological adjustment. Therefore, self-encouragement could be regarded as an effective variable in reducing children¡¯s psychological maladjustment and could be emphasized as a therapeutic variable in children¡¯s counseling. Self-encouragement could be emphasized in parenting and child rearing. Last, several suggestions were made for future research
